When is the Best Time To Fish for Giant, Trophy Northern Pike?
If you love to fish and have yet to go after Northern Pike, you don’t know what you’re missing! Northern Pike are real fighters, making them a favorite of many anglers throughout the U.S. and Canada. Pike fish are most active in cooler water temperatures – around 65° F and below. This means that in the cold Canadian waters, such as those around Kasba Lake Lodge, Northern Pike can be active all year long.
Young Northern Pike usually begin their lives in shallow water that’s thick in vegetation, which provides plenty of cover for the young fish. Later, as the fish begin to grow, they typically move to deeper water, where they have plenty of room to attain their huge size.
What constitutes “huge,” you ask? Try the Kasba Lake Lodge record for Northern Pike: 54 inches and 36 pounds! And the record for 2012 in particular was an impressive 48 inches! Now that’s what we call a real trophy fish. In fact, our Northern Pike weigh in at 6 to 8 pounds on average, and our guests bring in numerous pike each year that measure 36 to 50 inches.
Although you can certainly find trophy Northern Pike in abundance in Kasba Lake and the surrounding watersheds throughout the fishing season, the best time of year to catch the largest fish is late June and July. Typically, during these warm summer months, the large pike fish spend their time in shallow water – from 1 to 6 feet deep – where the dense vegetation provides protective cover.
You’ll quickly find what works best for these trophy pike: spoons, bass spinner baits, Sluggo-type worms, jerk baits and top-water plugs. And you won’t believe the incredible number of Northern Pike seeking refuge in the shallows of our creeks, rivers and bays!
Kasba Lake Lodge offers guests trophy Northern Pike fishing at its very best! If you’ve ever fished for Northern Pike, you understand how exciting it can be. These giant fish put up a fight that challenges any good angler. If you haven’t experienced northern pike fishing, isn’t it about time you did?
