Legendary Fishing At Kasba Lake Lodge
Fishing the legendary waters of Kasba Lake is something found on many bucket lists around the world, and the lucky few who do get to visit tend to leave with nothing but the fondest memories of the best freshwater fishing they have ever experienced. Through 40 years of amazing fishing stories at Kasba the Hill family has been there, and with any luck we will be there for 40 more.
Having spent many amazing years on the waters of Kasba Lake I consider myself among the truly blessed. The remote unspoiled landscape and endless expanses are something that reaches into your soul and takes hold. It is taken with you wherever you go. Always in the back of your mind. Kasba Lake has this effect on many and it shows with our guests and staff who return, year after year, to re-live this piece of fishing paradise.
Many people ask why the fishing is so good at Kasba, or why they should make a point to visit versus the many other fishing lodge options available in Canada. There is no one easy answer, but a cumulative answer of many things over many years that have helped to create a place on this planet truly mythical.
When people first think about Kasba, they tend to think first about the fishing, and for good reason. The fishing at Kasba is world-renowned and the reason it’s so good ranges from a highly productive water-shed, a rare history of zero commercial fishing, and a devotion to a strict catch-and-release policy when all others laughed. The number one reason the fishing is so spectacular at Kasba though is simply the structure of the lake. Glacial rock formations have had the biggest effect on the landscape in terms of fishing structure. Large continuous eskers (the remnants of glacial rivers) make their way across the land in a Northeast – Southwest pattern. These eskers provide phenomenal underwater structure for the fish that inhabit the lake, with dramatic drop-offs, shallow ledges, warm sandy shoals, and shallow cobble reefs that make superb spawning beds.
The above-water landscape surrounding Kasba Lake is almost as dramatic as the fishing on offer. Situated just below the official tree-line (the edge of habitat where trees are still able to grow) the difference in landscape from North to South is a superb example of the changes that occur in this harsh and unforgiving environment with a slight change in latitude. The South end of the lake is characterized by dense forests of fir and spruce, while the North end turns to barren landscapes with tree groves and rock outcrops. The scenery surrounding the lake is quite simply as stunning and natural as it gets.
The Kazan River is as spectacular a river fishery as to be found anywhere today. To witness the Canadian Heritage River roaring through the untouched landscape and bounding with shadows of Lake Trout chasing feisty Grayling is not a moment that is soon forgotten by any. The river is a lifeline of the North for many species of animal, with a high population of bear and moose roaming its shores, but you can’t forget mentioning the number one reason people choose to come all this way – the world-record Grayling. Certainly one of the most consistent and healthy fisheries for Grayling to be found anywhere on this planet, and an anglers paradise. When people speak about Kasba Lake the conversation inevitably returns to fishing the Kazan River as well.
We could go on and on about what makes Kasba so renowned, so mythical among fishermen, or why we are consistently rated above and beyond our competition. A lot of it does have to do with the natural bounty of the lake and its surroundings, yes, but just as important is the level of hospitality we extend to each and every fishing vacation guest who steps in our lodge. We know that as good as the fishing is, the experience is made by the people around you is the one that keeps bringing you back. But to really know what we are talking about you simply need to experience it for yourself, first-hand. The memories will last a lifetime.
